New York had an unexpected surprise today when 80s music god and electronic pioneer Thomas Dolby paid a visit to the Greene Space in Manhattan.  Thomas Dolby is getting ready to release his first album in almost 20 years entitled “A Map of the Floating Cities.”  He performed 2 new songs “17 Hills” and “Love is a Loaded Pistol” (a tribute to Billie Holiday) as well as his classic “She Blinded Me With Science.”  He spoke about his absence from music, which found him focusing on technology.  He created the polyphonic ringtones which are now found on pretty much every mobile phone!  Moments after his first performance in years, I met Thomas Dolby and he was very nice as you can see above.

Thomas Dolby also mentioned that he’ll be releasing 3 EPs leading up to the full length album.  He mentioned that he was very happy not to have lawyers or musical representation because in this age, musicians can self-release albums and still be able to own their master recordings.  Dolby’s musical career masters are owned by EMI Records which was recently taken over by a bank! It was a pleasure to hear and meet someone that is so forward thinking in this era of “plug in and drop out” that we are currently living in.  Thanks again Thomas!!
