The Jolly Boys

The Jolly Boys

The Jolly Boys have been integral to the fabric of Jamaica’s musical landscape and cultural heritage for nearly sixty years!  The style of music The Jolly Boys play is mento, Jamaican folk that predates (and had a major influence on) ska and reggae music.  The band is back with a new album of covers entitled “Great Expectation,” that range from Amy Winehouse to the Clash!  The tracklist for “Great Expectation” is:

Passenger (Iggy Pop)
Perfect Day (Lou Reed)
Rehab (Amy Winehouse)
Should I Stay or Should I Go (The Clash)
Nightclubbing (Iggy Pop)
Hanging On The Telephone (Blondie)
Do It Again (Steely Dan)
Riders On The Storm (the Doors)
Golden Brown (The Stranglers)
I Fought The Law (The Clash)
Ring Of Fire (Johnny Cash)
Blue Monday (New Order)
You Can’t Always Get What You Want (The Rolling Stones)
Don’t You Want Me (Bonus Track) (Human League)

Young Empires

Exciting news for music lovers!  Young Empires, the Canadian dance-punk trio have recorded a session for Daytrotter.  I’ve been raving about this group for the last year because they are awesome!  I’ve seen them live two times and both times, they have stolen the show.  Their upbeat tracks will have you dancing all over the place and their slower songs will make you want to light some candles and enjoy their luscious beats.   The Daytrotter session features two songs that are previously unreleased in any format including “Enter Through The Sun” and “Let You Sleep Tonight.”  Also on the set are their classics “Glory of the Night” and “White Doves.”  I have high hopes for Young Empires and after a recent triumph at SXSW, the music industry does too!  Get the Young Empires Daytrotter session for free here.  Young Empires will be performing at the Studio at Webster Hall in New York on April 7, 2011 and I cannot wait! See you there!

You’ll want to utilize Google for this one!

An unreleased 2001 David Bowie album entitled “Toy” has leaked.  Some of the songs were used for the album “Heathen” as well as B-sides, but a lot of it has remained unreleased.  Since this is probably the closest we are ever going to get to a new Bowie album, make sure to enjoy it.

The tracklist is:

1. Uncle Floyd
2. Afraid
3. Baby Loves That Way
4. I Dig Everything
5. Conversation Piece
6. Let Me Sleep Beside You
7. Toy (Your Turn To Drive)
8. Hole In The Ground
9. Shadow Man
10. In The Heat Of The Morning
11. You’ve Got a Habit Of Leaving
12. Silly Boy Blue
13. Liza Jane
14. The London Boys

Happy hunting!

Reissue You Gotta Have: Faith

Faith

Faith by George Michael. Deluxe 2 CD/1 DVD Remastered Edition. Out now from Legacy Recordings.

“Faith” by George Michael was the first CD I ever purchased when it was first released in 1987.  The debut solo album from Wham UK’s front man, George Michael is a perfect record.  The rest of the world thought so too as evidenced by the fact that “Faith” has sold over 20,000,000 copies to date.  Legacy Recordings have released the long awaited 2CD / 1 DVD remastered edition of “Faith” and it’s the reissue you gotta have!  The sound quality is a vast improvement over that on the initial release and tracks such as “Hand To Mouth,” “I Want Your Sex,” “Kissing A Fool,” and “Hard Day” have never sounded so good.

The bonus CD includes “Faith” era B-sides such as the instrumental versions of “Kissing a Fool” and “Faith” in addition to the 12″ version of “Monkey” and live B-sides “Love’s In Need of Love Today” and “I Believe When I Fall In Love,” which are both Stevie Wonder covers. Oddly, the “Listen Without Prejudice” B-side “Fantasy” is on the set, but it’s such a great song and is long out of print, so perhaps this is a way to reintroduce that brilliant song to the masses who are from the I-Pod generation.

Also, a 100 minute DVD featuring all of the “Faith” videos and two TV specials about “Faith” (from 1987 and 1988) are also included.  Housed in a deluxe hard-back book, this special edition has rare photos and essay examining the success of “Faith” as well as a 2010 interview with George Michael where he talks candidly about every track on the album.  If you are a fan of George Michael, don’t even think about not getting this!  And if the people of Sony are reading, please, please, please give “Listen Without Prejudice, Volume 1″ the same treatment!

The Tracklist for "Faith" by George Michael. Out NOW!
