VHS or Beta
VHS or Beta is back! The Brooklyn based band by way of Kentucky performed at The Studio at Webster Hall in New York on August 25, 2011. Their music is a great mixture of disco, house and rock. The entire venue was a non-stop dance party for the duration of the hour long set. Lead singer Craig Pfunder announced that it was good to be playing for New York again and the crowd returned the love. VHS or Beta have a new album called “Diamond and Death” out in September 2011 and will be playing live in New York again with Ladytron in October. Don’t mind if I do!

Lykke Li and Geoffrey Dicker
File this one under you win some, you lose some. I decided to check out the situation at New York’s Webster Hall for the first of 2 sold out shows by Swedish indie singer Lykke Li. The bad news – nobody was out there scalping tickets for the show when I arrived at the venue, so it’s not looking good for me to see her live tonight. The good news, Lykke Li arrived at the venue at the very same moment as I did. She was very nice. I didn’t bother to beg for tickets because as I know all too well, nothing beats a moment like that! Thanks Lykke!

Stevie Nicks
Rock goddess Stevie Nicks is releasing her latest solo album “In Your Dreams” this week and had planned on celebrating with a star studded concert at New York’s Webster Hall as well as with appearances on Good Day NY and the Today Show. According to her official website, she is battling pneumonia and had to cancel all appearances. She promises to reschedule when she is better. I hope that is soon! Get well Stevie!

If you haven’t become a die-hard fan of Australian rockers Tame Impala, I cannot recommend highly enough that you check out their album “Innerspeaker.” Sonically they are a cross between the psychedelic era of The Beatles, Pink Floyd and Cream. I can’t get enough of them. They performed a sold out show at New York’s Webster Hall on April 25, 2011 and here’s a sample of what you missed. Please note, on the screens behind the band, the lasers are programmed to react to the music! So cool!
And now enjoy, “Alter Ego,” live by Tame Impala.

Daniel Blumberg of Yuck
It’s so funny that on the same night, I saw two great bands with less than inviting band names: Yawn and Yuck. Yuck has been a blog darling band for the last year and I’ve been excited to see them live for quite some time. I have to confess, I didn’t listen to their music before seeing them in concert because in the back of my mind I expected to hear yucky music. Well, the yucky sounds you’ll hear from the UK Based indie rock band are great! All of their songs are upbeat and have a nice rock edge to them. The band played a 45 minute set at Webster Hall in New York on April 25, 2011 in between Yawn and Tame Impala and all three bands were excellent. Don’t just take my word for it, go to Yuck’s official site (link is above) and download a few free tracks. I think after hearing their music, you’ll agree that Yuck is a band that does not live up to their name.
