2010 has been a banner year for Jimi Hendrix fans. March saw the release of the eagerly anticipated “Valleys of Neptune” album followed by the release of all of his studio albums (accompanied with remastered sound and bonus documentaries). Just in time for Christmas, Legacy Recordings is releasing the motherlode: “West Coast Seattle Boy – The Jimi Hendrix Anthology.” Spread across 4 CDs and 1 DVD, this box set features a staggering 45 unreleased songs from all periods of Jimi’s career!
Disc one begins with 15 tracks from Jimi’s early days when he played with musicians such as The Isley Brothers and Little Richard. I have to admit, as big of a Hendrix fan as I am, I’d never heard most of these songs. To have them all collected in one place is really cool. All songs were recorded from 1964 – 1969. At this point, I should probably mention that the booklet inside the box set is filled with previously unreleased photos and extensive notes about each track. If applicable, the booklet will tell you recording dates as well as the personnel on each song.
