Zola Jesus is back! If you don’t know her music, she looks a bit like Christina Aguilera and has a voice like Siouxsie Sioux! I saw her perform early this year and she’s great! Her latest album “Conatus” will be released on September 26, 2011.
The tracklist is:
‘In Your Nature’
‘Lick the Palm of the Burning Handshake’
Thanks to NME for the tip. You can also hear the track “Vessel” from the album on NME’s site.

Nika Rosa Danilova aka Zola Jesus
When you scan the music sites on the net, you keep finding one name popping up over and over: Zola Jesus. Taking her name from French writer Emile Zola and some peoples’ lord and saviour, Zola Jesus is Russian/American singer Nika Rosa Danilova. If I had to describe her voice, I’d say it’s a perfect blend of Christina Aguilera, Patti Smith, Florence Welch and Siouxsie Sioux! If you haven’t gathered by now, the woman has a set of pipes! Musically, she’s a bit on the goth side (so imagine the Christina Aguilera high notes set to noise pop). I knew I was bound to get some religion packed into this day and I find it funny that Zola Jesus played at the Bowery Ballroom in New York on Easter Eve. Her stage presence was great (and not preachy) as she bounced all over the stage belting out song after song and hitting notes that could definitely resurrect the deceased. Probably the worst thing I could say is that the set was only about an hour long and it was clear that the crowd wanted much more. As this was my first exposure to her music, I am happy to report that she did her job as a rock star and I purchased her CD at the merch table after the show. With a voice like that and a very focused stage presence, I was very curious to see her off stage personality. Find out how my experience was after the jump.
